Negal Engineering AG has been developing and producing highly efficient power electronics solutions for industrial and general control engineering since 1992. By using the latest SiC- and
GaN-semiconductors with intelligent, digital control circuits losses can be drastically reduced and the efficiency can be significantly increased.
Tailor-made solutions with regard to specific requirements and form factors are our strength.Over the last few years, focal points have been developed, for which extensive expert knowledge has been built up. The use of microprocessors has made solutions with extended functionality possible. E.G., a UPS power supply with several charge controller functions can be implemented with only one power stage. The operating mode is adapted and diagnostic functions are also available.

Ultra high dynamic switching power supply
Our new class of fully digital switching power supplies is ideal for applications requiring a highly dynamic change of the output voltage. To ensure the high dynam-ic in both directions, the power supply must be able to actively discharge the electrical energy of the output capacitors back into the DC-link capacitors. This is implemented by an output stage with galvanic isolation, where all diodes have been replaced by MOS FETs. The output stage can therefore be operated bidirec-tionally by means of suitable control algo-rithms.
Power supplies with up to 6kV or lower output voltages have already been real-ized with this functional principle. Lower output voltages are possible without any problems. SiC or GaN MOSFETs are used depending on the requirements. The set-point is set via an analog or digital control interface, such as RS232, RS-485/RS422 or Bluetooth.
The measurement shows the time diagram of the output voltage for a sine, a triangle and a rectangle setpoint. In this example the setpoint is given by an analog 0-10V signal.
The output voltage range is 5kV.
A high degree of efficiency can be achieved with an optimal choice of semi-conductors. The additional costs of the higher-quality semiconductors can be largely compensated for by using a simpler cooling concept.

Digital switched mode power supply
Due to the completely digital design of a switch-mode power supply, fewer components are required, the sensitive control via an analog optocoupler is eliminated and various additional functions can be programmed flexibly. Modern microprocessors always allow the appropriate operating mode to be selected. Thus, the circuit always runs optimally regarding to efficiency and EMC. In contrast, analog controllers have numerous special functions, but experience shows that these are non-transparent and prone to errors. The digital switching power supply is controlled on the secondary side. The gate signal of the FET is generated on the secondary side by the microprocessor and transmitted to the primary side by the use of a digital coupler. The use of an analogue optocoupler and its inherent component tolerances and temperature influences are thus eliminated.
The development cost of a digital solution is easier to estimate. In contrast, analogue controllers, especially when used for flyback converters, can always cause surprises during development. The separate, internal auxiliary power supply enables a low standby power, a defined behaviour in case of overload and short circuit, as well as mains voltage monitoring. The digital solution offers a flexible operating concept. In order to implement customer-specific requirements, all that is usually required is a software change.
Some examples of functions which can be easily integrated with a digital solution:
- Optimisation of the efficiency in the partial load range
- Detection of mains over- or undervoltage
- Options for error logging
- Detection of LED malfunctions
- Aging and temperature compensation of the LED
- Integration of digital interfaces such as DALI
- Integration of sensors

EMC filter design software
Switched-mode power supplies have so far hardly been able to do without electrolytic capacitors that limit their lifetime. Especially at higher power levels (>100W), aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the most commonly used energy storages. Mainly high ambient temperatures and ripple currents have a considerable influence on the rate of drying out and thus limits the lifetime of capacitors. Negal Engineering has developed a power supply without electrolytic capacitors. Especially for LED applications power supplies with long lifetime are indispensable.
